13 Questions: Across the Sun

1. Can you give us a brief intro to the band?
Across The Sun was formed in August of 2004, in nowhere-land (a.k.a. Scappoose OR), by childhood friends. After evolving over the years, the current and permanent line-up consists of: Sam Hafer on guitar, Shane "The Brain" Murray on Keys, Alan Ashcraft on Drums, John "A.C. Slater" Malloy on bass and myself, Brandon Davis, on Vocals.

2. Musically, what would you say your main influences are?
Our musical influences literally come from every type of music there is! From Killswitch Engage to Boys II Men, Katatonia to Copeland, and Soilwork to Drake! If I had to pick a top 3 for our particular style, it would be: Soilwork, Killswitch Engage, and Dark Tranquillity.

3. Tell us about your upcoming/present album/demo releases?
Since our inception, we have released 3 E.P.'s: 2006's This War, 2008's Storms Weathered, and 2009's Pestilence & Rapture. Pestilence was released on Authintik Ink. Our upcoming debut album on Metal Blade Records is titled Before The Night Takes Us. The theme is about confronting one's demons, dealing with them head on, moving past them, and looking toward a positive, brighter future. It comes out March 15th.

4. What are your upcoming tour plans?
Our first tour of 2011 is the Atticus Young and the Reckless tour, which features Our Last Night, Attila, Vanna, Arsnists Get All The Girls, Bullet For Pretty Boy, and Armor For The Broken.

5. Where is your favorite city to gig, both in terms of playing and visiting?
As a band, our favourite places to play are: The Rave (Milwaukee, WI), Peabody's (Cleveland, OH) and The Quarter (Baltimore, MD). The Rave is an amazing venue, one which we have played a couple times. The history and the building itself are amazing! We love Cleveland, we have many friends here, and the food is to die for. We also have a fond memory of Peadody's which includes a gnarly stomach virus haha! And The Quarter has the best accommodations of any venue we have ever played in the U.S., so props to them for making the touring bands comfortable on the road!

6. If you could go out on tour with any band, who would it be?
I think if we as a band had a choice to tour with whomever we wanted, it would be: Soilwork, Deadlock, Killswitch Engage, Scar Symmetry, Dark Tranquility, and All That Remains!

7. Have you ever suffered an onstage/tour related injury?

Haha no injuries yet thank god. We all got drunk in California on our first tour, and I picked up Alan and our old bassist Colin and tossed one into a brick wall and the other into a pile of broken glass haha. It's a wonder neither of them got hurt from it! However, Across The Sun is no stranger to illness on tour that's for sure lol. We have all sustained some type of severe illness while on the road, all ending in vomiting and life hating!

8. What's the funniest thing that's ever happened to you on tour?
This would be a more exciting read if we were a crazy party band, but we're not haha. I would say the funniest thing that has happened to us on tour is when we accidentally entered Canada on our way to a Walmart, somewhere in NY. They searched our van and we played the, how old is everyone and what do you play in the band, game with one of the Canadian officers. She got literally everything right on the first guess, it was nuts!!!

9. What are the best / worst things about being in a band?
For me, the best thing about being in this band is being able to express myself freely, write music that I love and am very passionate about, and being able to share that with the world thanks to our amazing manager and record label. Seeing my, and really our, dream come true and seeing it through to whatever end is in store for us is the greatest gift we have been given!
Being far away from friends, family, and our home for months at a time is probably the worst part of being in a band. That, and being broke, hungry, and disgusting haha. But that comes with the territory and all are willing sacrifices for what we get in return for having the opportunity to experience living our dreams.

10. What's your personal poison of choice?
My personal poison is Jager and Rockstar!!!

11. Which band / album do you love but know you shouldn't?
I have no qualms nor insecurities with any of the music I listen to. But if I had a "guilty pleasure", it would be any Boys II Men or Josh Groban album.

12. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck, if a wood chuck could chuck wood?

According to ask.com:
The amount of wood that woodchucks would chuck on a given day varies greatly with the individual woodchuck. According to a Wall Street Journal article, New York State wildlife expert Richard Thomas found that a woodchuck could chuck around 35 cubic feet of dirt in the course of digging a burrow. Thomas reasoned that if a woodchuck could chuck wood, he would chuck an amount equal to 700 pounds.

13. Any last words?
I speak for all the guys when I say thank you for all your support, thanks for reading this and any other press we get, make sure you pre-order our album Before The Night Takes Us by March 9th, and come see us on tour this year. We love you all!!!
