13 Questions: Albatross

1. Describe your band in 13 words or less.
Hungry. Always hungry. Yes, I mean food!

2. What are your main influences, both musically and otherwise?
Old school rock n’ roll and metal.
My neighbour who breaks into a song each time there is a power failure. That dastardly voice tells me I cannot, must not, definitely should not sing like that.

3. Tell us about the last record you released?
Our debut EP – Dinner Is You released last year. Had the most fun recording, believe it or not, in a college hostel room. Was incredible getting Andy Larocque to work on the songs. Four songs of pure metal just the way I have always loved, blending each band member’s influences that range from old school rock to progressive modern metal.

4. When are you next out on tour?
There are no tours planned as of now, we’re just playing a one off gig in Ahmedabad, India towards the end of January.

5. Your home town aside, which is your favourite city to play?
Definitely Bangalore. Though the last time that we were there, the turn out wasn’t very encouraging. But I absolutely adore the city and the metal heads out there. You have the guys swearing by their Floyd, Purple and the likes and at the same time, there are the lads who’d discuss at length the modern bands. A mix of people who know their music.

6. If you could go out on tour with any two other bands, who would you pick?
Indian – Devoid and Demonic Resurrection (pure fun off stage; badasses on it)
Otherwise – Iron Maiden and Iced Earth??? (err...just saying)

7. What has been the funniest / most horrific thing that’s ever happened to you whilst on stage / tour?
Horrific: Being drunk on stage on debut gig and messing up the performance for the band.
Funniest: Introducing the band in the middle of a song, turning eventually to the drummer and instead of calling his name out loud saying, “What the fuck? Where are your clothes???”

8. What’s the best thing about being in a band?
This one’s easy. Not about the music, not about the fame. Just the feeling of hanging out together with four other awesome mother fuckers who are absolute family.
And the mad food binging that happens after (and even during) every jam.

9. What was the first record you ever bought?
It was much later that I actually started “buying” records. Most of the early stuff was just hand-downs from elder brother. If I remember correctly, the first one I bought was Aerosmith’s ‘Nine Lives’. Wasn’t too impressed. (Really? I like that record! - Citizen X)

10. What’s the most embarrassing CD in your collection?
Reel 2 Real’s ‘Move It’. I am really sorry. Really really am.
Mariah Carey’s ‘Butterfly’ could qualify too. I was too naive to not know that those boobs were just being jiggled at me to buy rubbish music.

11. If you had to give up music and do a different job, what would your ideal job be?
Own a restaurant and also operate a security agency that would keep the Albatross guys far far away from the food joint.

12. Tell us something you’ve never told anyone else in an interview.
I sing about Satan, cannibals, horror stories and I go home and sleep with my lights on, prefer vegetarian food and am too God-fearing!

13. Famous last words?
“Food break?”
