13 Questions: Falkenbach

1. Can you give us a brief intro to the band?
Oh, that's actually quite a long story…but to make it short…the band formed back in 1994 with the intention to combine many different elements to a black metal texture, such as clear vocals, acoustic guitars etc. The folk music element was a large part of the whole idea and now 17 years later it's quite the same…even if some parts have changed it's still a mixture of many different musical expressions. From the beginning it was only me in the band but the last 11 years we've been two guys, I and another guy called Mattias. We play a several instruments each and are satisfied with the line-up.

2. Musically, what would you say your main influences are?
I guess that we don't have any real musical influence that we boost our mind out of, instead the fuel is to explore the universal laws of nature, human, music etc.. that drives us to continue our journey and try to find new paths within our own path. If I listen to music it's mostly progressive and symphonic rock from the 70's that I put into the stereo/computer.

3. Tell us about your upcoming/present album/demo releases?
It's a glance at our past but still a step forward in our exploration of our own formula. That includes harsh metal, progressive elements, folk music, ambient soundscapes etc. It's a summary of our catalogue but still have many fresh ideas and new perspectives on it. Hard to give in words as it's so based on emotions.

4. What are your upcoming tour plans?
We're not a live act at this point…hard to find the right people to work with in a small place like we're living in. So, at this point we're just a studio act

5. Where is your favorite city to gig, both in terms of playing and visiting?
Germany in general is very good for Vintersorg and we like it there…but of course I would like to go to for example Egypt for the cultural aspect of it…not the whole riot thing of course.. just to see those pyramids once in my life. But my all time fave city to be in is, and this may sound awkward, is the one that I'm living in. Here I feel at ease and are inspired all the time.

6. If you could go out on tour with any band, who would it be?
Hard to say as it depends if it should be nice to the audience or just me. I mean I would like to play with Camel, Nektar, Uriah Heep etc…but the fans would maybe feel disturbed by that. But a band like Opeth for example fits I think from an audience perspective.

7. Have you ever suffered an onstage/tour related injury?

Not really, I remember one time though in Germany when I was very sick, some really nasty cold I guess, and we're playing a filled up venue that had no ventilation system, so people in the audience was passing out due to the lack of oxygen and I was about to as well.

8. What's the funniest thing that's ever happened to you on tour?
The creativeness of people coming together with a common goal is so nice, I don't really see any down sides to it more than the ordinary thing with different wills and such, but that's not just in band situations.

9. What are the best / worst things about being in a band?

10. What's your personal poison of choice?

11. Which band / album do you love but know you shouldn't?
No.. I just listen to things that I like…and if I like it I'm not ashamed of it in any way. I mean sometimes you go to a friend's party and they play things that you don't like but I'm very skilled socially so I just sit back and let them have their time, I'm the guest you know.

12. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck, if a wood chuck could chuck wood?

It depends if it's chucked in the woods or in Chuck's wooden chuckery!

13. Any last words?
The new album is a great adventure and if you like such things you should check it out.
