Album Review: Cavalera Conspiracy - Blunt Force Trauma
by Kitty Synthetica

Few reunions were ever as hyped and when the Cavalera brothers informed the world that after many years of not even talking to each other, they were going to work on new music together. Even fewer still have been able to live up to the hype in the same simple and brutal way that the first Cavalera Conspiracy album did. Needless to say then that expectations were running high when Max and Igor announced that they would be making a second sojourn in to the recording studio.

Blunt Force Trauma is that second album, and it does not disappoint. As brutal as it's predecessor from the first track, Warlord, until the closing notes of Genghis Khan, the album is packed with death and thrash inspired chugging guitar riffs tending to be complemented with speedy tremolo picked solos. As expected, Igor's drumming is particularly powerful throughout, pulling off some highly impressive songs. There are some really massive breakdowns, such as the ending of "I Speak Hate" and the mighty "Target", which are handcrafted for playing live. Musically this latest offering from the brother's Cavalera is tight, powerful, and a clear indication that there is still plenty of gas left in the tank of this project. Having sang it's praises though, Blunt Force Trauma does manage to weigh in at a meagre 34 minutes, despite it's 11 tracks, which definitely leaves you wanting more. Definitely worth a listen, though it's not hard to imagine that these songs will really get the attention they deserve when seen live the next time Cavalera Conspiracy hits the UK.

Album rating: 8/10
