Danish
power-metallers return for their sixth full-length
Metalmorphosized. With a seemingly constantly changing
lineup (the lineup actually changed during the recording
process) and a mixture of new tracks and tracks re-recorded
from old demos this album should sound like it's all
over the place
yet somehow it sounds tight and
focused.
I will start off by saying that anyone expecting anything
'groundbreaking' should look away now as this band
only reinforces the power-metal stereotype of incredibly
fast verses and epic, sing-a-long choruses
then
again, is that a bad thing?
On Metalmorphosized, Iron Fire are sticking to what
they know and the album sounds very consistent because
of that. This is despite the fact that many of these
tracks were in fact written and demoed several years
ago, they all fit nevertheless.
For the most part, the songs stick to the generic
power metal formula of speed and catchy singing, but
here and there are hints that Iron Fire are more than
that. 'Crossroad' particularly showcases the bands
slower, more epic side with some great soloing and
great vocal harmony work. Also, album opener 'Reborn
To Darkness' showcases some heavier, groovier timings
than would normally be associated with the genre.
The focal part of each track is most definitely the
vocals, they are absolutely excellent throughout the
album and showcase an excellent range of clean and
slightly growled delivery.
Unfortunately, other than the few tracks that buck
the trend, much of the album is just too repetitive
to encourage repeat listening. There aren't particularly
any bad tracks, although some of the songs do blur
together a little due to this.
The production is a little too dry and harsh for my
taste but this is only a minor fault.
