For
a first EP, this is definitely something to be proud
of, "Afflicting the Dichotomy of Trepid Creation"
is a richly technical collection of four well crafted
tracks. Within the first 2 minutes of the first track
"Transplant Of Dimensional Recourse", we
are made well aware that is that this is a set of
very capable musicians, combining powerful growling
vocals, reminiscent of Shagrath, over flawless drumming
with tight guitars and bass.
However, the weakness seems to be that the songs occasionally
lack originality and passion, tending to sound too
much like a platform for the band to try and outdo
each other and to show off their obvious talent. To
steer away from falling into the trap of sounding
identical to other black metal bands, "Pale Chalice"
should concentrate on incorporating more of the things
that make them more unique, in particular the drop
outs and more melodic moments which keep the songs
fresh, particularly evident throughout "Command
Of The Formless".
Not to say that their brutal main sections of song,
where the whole band is playing full speed, are a
weakness, this is obviously the main desired sound
for the album and they pull it off with ease. The
drums in particular are incredibly tight. However,
when the guitars vary away from the main chugging
riffs, they capture a more interesting sound and the
softer melodic drop-outs create a great contrast within
songs, especially from around two minutes thirty in
"Caressed By A Feeble Flame", the shortest
track on the EP.
From these four tracks, it will be interesting to
see what a full album will hold for "Pale Chalice",
but for an EP this is a high quality set of songs
worthy of recognition and I can imagine that the band
would be especially suited to playing live.
