Recent
interviews reveal that the band was able to make this
album on seriously rough grounds, with singer Aaron
Lewis and Mike Mushok barely on speaking terms and
the imminent departure of drummer Jon Wysocki. However,
the final product is record to be proud of. This album
caters for a wide scope, with a definite appeal for
the traditional angsty long-haired teen with Slipknot-esque
vocal dynamics and hooky lyrics (see "Paper Wings").
There has clearly been a great deal of time spent
on song-writing and it truly pays off as the album
holds your interest till the end. It follows the time-old
trusty formula of chugging riffs, palm muting and
big angry choruses, but with the refreshing mellow
track, like the final "Something to remind you"
(though the chord sequence is often weirdly similar
to "Holding out for a hero" by Bonnie Tyler!).
Highlights include opening track, "Eyes Wide
Open", the meaty "Not Again" and "The
Bottom", featured in the new Transformers movie.
The band can also boast a guest appearance from Snoop
Dogg on "Wannabe", though arguably his vocals
weren't really needed here.
Though a more conservative metal-head may fob this
off for being more hard rock/grunge, but Staind is
a vibrant and eclectic album that is well worth a
listen.
