Firstly,
this is definitely not a Metal album. From their appearance,
many assume that Within Temptation share the gothic
heaviness of other female fronted bands, but this
is no Epica or Nightwish. The album is packed with
very accessible tracks, with especially catchy tunes
that share the quality of chart songs for getting
'stuck in your head'. Musically, the vocals stand
out hugely from the arrangements, as the instruments
seem almost subdued in comparison. However, this isn't
necessarily a bad thing, I really enjoyed the album.
The stunning Sharon den Adel's vocals remain the highlight
throughout. She pulls off some impressively high notes
without turning operatic, plus her accent makes her
voice aesthetically ear pleasing and easy to listen
to. Tracks like "Fire and Ice" and strongest
song on the album "Shot In The Dark" truly
show off her vocal abilities. "Faster" would
be a strong song, but is so close to H.I.M's rendition
of "Wicked Game", sharing the exact chord
sequence, that if you notice the similarity it's impossible
to hear anything else.
This is a refreshingly unique concept idea, as the
album is based along the storyline to a comic that
shares the same name. This keys in with three short
videos, two of which have already released, and are
both compelling and beautifully filmed. Definitely
worth a watch.
As a "rock" album, this is a great piece
of work, with addictive vocal tunes and enough chunky
guitars to appease the fans of heavier work.
