Gig Review: Shadows Chasing Ghosts - Leeds Cockpit

By Chloe Headlong

First up tonight we had One Night Stand With Fate [6]. They had a good introduction and there was a great energy from the band, despite one vocalist having a foot injury. Even though you could feel the energy from the band, this did not reflect on the audience who spent the set stood in the same spot. The clean vocals used were very good, not whiney at all, but the screaming/growling vocals sometimes lacked power which let their performance down. There were many breakdowns used it their music, but towards the end of the set, they became too repetitive and predictable. Credit to the drummer with his BPM!

The next up was We Stand Victorious [3]. This band was also very energetic which reflected on the mainly female audience, who were dancing for most of the set. This band had powerful growls but the clean vocals could be improved. I would describe this band as " New Age Main Stream Pop Core " which lacked originality and for most of the set, were very boring. This band were a real disappointment and were not enjoyable at all.

Main support for the night came in the form of Polar [5]. This band had screeching, powerful vocals, but a while into the set, they became too overbearing. Occasionally brilliant, clean backing vocals which cut through the penetrating screams. There was a great crowd reaction with mosh pits that went on for most of the set. What really let the band down was their repetitiveness. After just a few songs, the sound was unoriginal.

As so finally is was on to headliners Shadows Chasing Ghosts [7]. There was a brilliant build up to their first song which got the crowd fired up and ready to mosh! There were circle pits and mosh pits, right from the beginning of the set, all the way to the end. Clean vocals were sometimes ok, but sometimes let the band down. A lot of effort was put into their performance which is always a great thing and definitely makes the gig more enjoyable. The songs throughout the set were unique which made the performance interesting and definitely not boring. There was a cut off of power towards the end of the set which was unfortunate but the band persuaded the club to turn the power back on for a couple more songs! It was a good ending to the gig which included the song " Home " which the crowd really enjoyed. Their overall performance was very good and they were definitely the best band of the evening.
